Job description

Our client is one of the world’s most respected design, engineering, project management and building services consultancies. They are currently looking for a Principal Engineer to join their Design and Advanced Technology (D&AT) Practice, to work on projects based principally in Swansea office but with opportunities to work around the UK and overseas.  

The Practice has an extensive portfolio of local authority, regeneration and commercial projects and it also supports the wider business in Water and Highways Sectors.  

As the Principal Civil Engineer you will be part of a team delivering flood risk alleviation projects involving: coastal, river and surface water flood protection. The right person for this job will be a good communicator, technically proficient and be able to demonstrate a track record in project delivery through all stages of the project from initial feasibility to delivery of schemes with contractors on site. You will be comfortable in leading a team and presenting practical technical solutions to the clients. You will have experience of producing buildable designs that fully consider safety and the environment.  

Using your technical and delivery skills, you will be responsible for project governance and technical accountability at appraisal, concept, detailed design and construction stages. You will also lead input into bid and tender preparation. Your duties will include the production of multi-discipline design packages to the budget and programme.  

Some of the other responsibilities will include:  

- Assisting to generate repeat business and develop new business opportunities.  

- Assisting with responding to queries and liaising with Clients and other relevant stakeholders.

Requirements

- Honours Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.  

- Professionally qualified with membership of the ICE or CIWEM.  

 

Essential Criteria:  

- Ability to work within a team environment with a dedicated approach to meeting project deadlines.  

- Enthusiasm and self-motivation to drive for continuous improvement and innovation.  

- A proactive and collaborative team leader, who can work closely with colleagues and fit seamlessly into a delivery team.  

- Experience of mentoring assistant and graduate engineering colleagues  

- Sound interpersonal skills and ability to converse with a wide range of colleagues across a number of engineering disciplines.  

- Experience of working with key clients such as Local Authorities, Government agencies, and/or major Contractors.  

- Proficiency in relevant design standards  

- Ability to prepare reports and collate specifications – for projects and tenders.  

- Have experience of programme delivery, resource allocation, and budgets.  

- Computer literate and fully conversant with MS Office suite and familiarity with relevant engineering analysis software packages.  

 

Desirable:  

- Site experience in delivery and oversight and working with contractors  

- Have contractual and commercial awareness e.g. NEC3/4 contracts.  

- Experience and familiarity of consenting requirements for the water related schemes  

- Production of business cases to support FCERM schemes  

- Interest in developing skills in digital engineering.  

- Familiarity working in a BIM and digitally progressive environment
