Thames Water are carrying out a £190m upgrade at Beckton Sewage Treatment located in the London Borough of Newham, to help clean up the River Thames.
The improvements will enable the site to treat 60 per cent more sewage than it does now and allow for a ten per cent population increase until 2021.
The project will allow better treatment of flows incurred by heavy rainfalls and storms thereby protecting the River Thames. Also the installation of a wind turbine will help generate 8 per cent of the energy needed to power the site.
The landscape will also be enhanced as the wildlife will be more protected and footpaths will be opened along the northern edge of the site by the River Roding and River Thames.
