UK Power Networks role is to take electricity at high voltages from the National Grid and transform it down to voltages suitable for commercial and domestic use. UK Power Networks are responsible for ensuring that the infrastructure that brings power to homes, businesses, hospitals, schools and other public services continues to deliver reliable, safe and sustainable electricity 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Whatever electricity supplier you pay your bills to, UK Power Networks will be working on the electricity network all year round, making sure the lights stay on and that industries have the power they need.
UK Power's three networks use more than 160,000km of underground cables and overhead lines to distribute electricity - about four times the circumference of the Earth.
UK Power Networks key responsibilities include:
Maintaining the safety and reliability of the electricity networks
Connecting new customers' premises to electricity
Extending and upgrading the network to meet changing needs
