Job description

Our client is a market leader within the Construction, Civils and Rail sector, they currently have an exciting opportunity for a Managing Quantity Surveyor to join them in Solihull.  

 

Job Description:  

 

You will oversee a portfolio of work, typically alongside either an Operations Manager, or Contracts Manager. to deliver their portfolio of work, the MQS will have available a commercial team of varying skill levels as required (subject to workloads and forecast works). it is the MQS and their operational counterpart’s responsibility to win / deliver and close out projects with support from Work Winning, and other functions as necessary to ensure success. The MQS will report into a Programme Commercial Manager who will oversee a number of SQS/MQS. As this is a Managing role, it is expected that this role will require minimal supervision / guidance but will be subject to peer review and audit throughout the year.  

 

As a Managing Quantity Surveyor, you will have the following accountabilities:  

- Implement commercial strategy for the business  

- In conjunction with the relevant Project Management team member, be accountable for the profitability of the projects within your portfolio, and develop an appropriate commercial strategy for the project to ensure delivery of required margins  

- Contribute to the management and maintenance of a contract cost reporting system ensuring all financial information is managed and up-to-date and tracked with budget/tender allowances, commitments and deviations highlighted and managed  

- With other members of your team, produce and provide accurate forecasts of project cost to completion and final value  

- Ensure month end Reporting CVRs and Dashboards are correct and updated (inline with Diary) to enable Group Reporting timeframe to be achieved.  

- CVR Reports for All projects within Portfolio  

- Portfolio Dashboard and Forecast updated for in Year and future years.  

- WIP position detailed and action planned  

- Margin improvement plans defined where necessary (or in process of being detailed)  

- Monitor cash flow and valuation plan, ensuring applications are made correctly and in a timely manner  

- Ensure contract variations are identified, valued and turned into agreed variation orders with the customer in a timely manner  

- Assist in ensuring effective records are maintained to support claims and that applications for payment for variations are issued inline with agreed terms  

- Manage the subcontract tender process, including the selection of sub-contractors and provision of all relevant contract and schedule documentation  

- Ensure that subcontracts are placed in an appropriate manner to step down appropriate responsibilities from the Main Contract  

- Ensure that each sub-contractors account is managed strictly in accordance with their terms and conditions  

- Provide accurate monthly reporting of cost and value on the project(s) in line with the Company reporting process  

- Ensure the valuation policy is followed at all times  

- As a Managing Quantity Surveyor you will guide and direct your teams development, with clear career development paths for each member of your team  

- You will ensure relevant CPD is attended by you and your team throughout the year  

- As a senior manager within the business, you will be accountable for ensuring governance  

ICRM) is strictly followed and controlled within your portfolio of work.

Requirements

Experience and Skills:  

- An organised, innovative and creative Quantity Surveyor with knowledge and experience of working on Projects  

- Experience of collating costs and maximising value  

- Experience of working as a QS, including the need to support with financial and commercial control within a project  

- Experience of procuring and managing supply chain  

- Maintain a Personal Development Plan  

- Working towards professional accreditation  

- Support development of others around you  

- Experience of working as part of a team  

- Demonstration of working to deadlines, working efficiently and to a high standard  

- Demonstration of resilience and determination to succeed  

- Demonstrate clear written and verbal communication skills.  

- Demonstrate ownership/commercial awareness.  

- Effective time management, organisational, interpersonal and negotiation skills.  

 

Desirable Experience:  

- Experience of NEC 3 and/or 4.  

- Experience of JCT D&B or Int  

- Experience of Network Rail Contract Suite.  

- Interest in rail projects  

 

Required Qualifications/Training:  

- BSc in Quantity Surveying or equivalent level of education or experience
